Contemporary societies are in a constant state of alert due to multiple crises, including wars, climate change, environmental disasters, displacement and migration, and pandemics. These crises put pressure on social coexistence and democratic political systems, both of which are under threat from radical positions. The same applies to the values and goals of the European Union, defining itself through freedom, democracy, equality, and the rule of law. During times of crisis it is thus vital that European citizens – with their different cultural, religious and linguistic backgrounds – actively promote these fundamental values and rights. School teachers are key influencers, educating and training young people to empower them for the future.

Educational institutions – and schools in particular – must teach, learn and live fundamental democratic values so that future generations are equipped to meet current and future challenges. Alongside self-reflection, tolerance of ambiguity and conflict management, necessary skills include tolerance, intercultural competence and resilience to extremist tendencies and attitudes.

Drawing on examples from German democracy education, our Staff Week gives teacher educators from various European countries the chance to share ideas on how to implement democracy education in different contexts, identify similarities and differences across Europe, and gain inspiration for their own teacher education activities.
