The ESD Colloquium series organised by the Centre for Education for Sustainable Development brings renowned experts from various disciplines (in the context of education for sustainable development) to the University of Education. In the summer semester of 2026, the four lectures will be held under the motto ‘Global Learning – Global Perspectives’. After the lectures, there will be an opportunity for in-depth discussion.
This lecture - given by Prof. Dr. Wilma van Staden (Maynooth University) - explores global learning as a co-engaged, change-oriented process rather than the transfer of knowledge or best practice across contexts. Drawing on perspectives from social and transformative learning, it examines how learners work with real-life sustainability challenges through Change Projects that are grounded in local contexts and lived experience. Using examples from North–South educational collaborations and digitally mediated learning initiatives, the lecture shows how digital contexts can support dialogue, deliberation and collective action across difference. Particular attention is given to the pedagogical implications for teacher education and education for sustainable development, highlighting how learning for change can be both locally situated and globally connected. Time for questions and discussion will be included.
